CLOTHING TIPS
The primary goal is to direct the viewer's attention to the face or faces in the photograph.
Think ‘timeless and classic’. Avoid clothing with distracting elements such as text or big logos.
Bold colours such as bright red, purple and orange can overpower the face, and can sometimes create a reflected colour-cast on the skin.
As a rule of thumb, bold prints such as large stripes, large plaids, and strong floral patterns are visually confusing and do not photograph well.
Having said that, loud clothing is some people’s vibe and it’s part of the look they want to convey, and you’ll see some examples on my website where people have completely pulled it off. So ultimately it’s up to you.
Choose clothing you’re comfortable in. Fitting outfits tend to be more flattering, so don’t be tempted to try to cover anything up by choosing bulky, ill-fitting outfits. There is always the option of a gentle nudge in Photoshop if there are lumps and bumps that bother you!
Wear long-sleeved clothing if you’re self-conscious about your upper arms. The paler skin of an exposed arm can also lead the viewer’s eye away from your face if you’re wearing a dark top and the background is also dark, so that might be another reason to consider long sleeves.
Jackets give clean and professional lines to a business headshot and can be removed for a more casual look.
If we’re taking a range of portraits with different backgrounds, please bring both pale and darker clothing options (just a couple of each is plenty) that we can select from.
